About Us

    About Ian Brown Funeral Directors

Ian Brown Senior took over W M Gray & Sons in 1958 when it was trading as a joiner and undertakers. Ian Brown Junior then joined the business which was rebranded as Ian Brown Funeral Directors in 1988.

Ian Brown Funeral Directors provide funeral services within the community of Carstairs. We have a close, trusting relationship with many Carstairs families as well as those living in the wider Lanark and Carluke communities.

The team at our funeral home will provide advice at every stage of the funeral planning process, and will arrange an individual and unique funeral to help you celebrate the life of your loved one.

Here at Ian Brown Funeral Directors we also offer an affordable prepaid funeral plan, Choice, so that you can arrange and pay for a funeral in advance. This will protect your family from rising costs and remove uncertainty about your wishes.

If you would like to talk to us about planning a funeral, or our Choice plan, please come and see us in any of our funeral homes, or if you’d rather we can arrange a home visit. We’re also available 24 hours a day on the phone so if you need anything please don’t hesitate to call your local funeral home.

    Meet the Team

    Ian Brown

    Consultant

At aged 16, Ian joined the family business alongside his dad, serving his time firstly as a joiner and then gradually following in his dad’s Funeral Directing footsteps. Their Funeral business successfully expanded over many years through absolute dedication and hard work.

Ian has now been a Funeral Director for 40 years, still continuing the family business.

Ian is married to Linda and they have two adult children who also have their own careers. Ian is hugely involved within the local community and he is always caring and sensitive to the family’s needs.

    Fraser Mackay

    Funeral Manager

Fraser has been a Funeral Director for over 20 years and can think of no better, worthwhile or rewarding job to do. It’s both an honour and a privilege to help guide grieving families through a very sad time in their lives.

In his spare time, he enjoys the outdoors including hillwalking and exploring hidden gems of Scotland.

    Hazel Crawford

    Trainee Funeral Director

Hazel is a retired Detective Constable from Police Scotland. She is looking forward to transferring these skills into caring for families and deceased persons in the funeral industry.

Hazel is married with a son, two stepchildren and a fox red labrador. She enjoys candle making and pyrography.

    Derek Hume

    Trainee Funeral Director

Derek was a police officer for over 20 years before joining Ian Brown Funeral Directors, to begin a new career. He is dedicated to serving families during difficult times, bringing his kind, compassionate nature to work.

Outside of work, Derek is married to Eilidh and is a keen sports fan who combines his passion for rugby and a love for travel.

    Stuart Odell

    Funeral Service Operative

As a people person, Stu has had a passion to help people. He simply desired to work in a caring profession, looking after people during their most difficult of times. His father passed away in 2016 and his family was looked after professionally and with courtesy which are all the traits her wants to emulate in this profession.

    Sai Chan

    Funeral Service Operative

Sai is a retired Sergeant from Police Scotland. He was a DVI (Disaster Victim Identification) trainer for the police, where his natural instincts for caring for deceased came to fruition. These will undoubtedly be of use in the funeral industry.

He is married to Jackie, with two sons, three grandchildren and three granddogs who all keep him occupied. He enjoys walking, cooking and caravanning, not all necessarily at once.

    Anne Buchanan

    Administrator/Arranger

Anne started work at Ian Brown as an administrator/arranger and brings a wealth of experience in administration. Somewhat unsure of what to expect in the funeral industry, Anne has grown in confidence and enjoys interacting with people and helping guide them through a difficult time in their lives.

In her spare time, she likes gardening and retail therapy.
